Game-changer for India's border security: Ladakh missile unit gets green light

Eastern Ladakh remains a high-priority zone due to continued infrastructure buildup by China. Enhancing connectivity to India’s northernmost military outpost at Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO), near the Karakoram Pass, has also been a key focus.

In a significant development for India’s border security, the wildlife authorities in Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh have recently granted preliminary environmental approvals for a series of crucial defence infrastructure projects near the borders with China and Pakistan, an Economic Times report said on Monday. These proposals are now awaiting final clearance from the central government, particularly the Union Ministry of Environment’s expert panels on wildlife and forest conservation.

These projects aim to strengthen India's military readiness near the Siachen Glacier and significantly boost air defence capabilities in Ladakh and other critical border areas, the ET report said citing sources.

The report added that in a meeting on April 24 last month, the Ladakh State Board for Wildlife had given nod to the establishment of missile units and a forward aviation base near the Shyok River, as well as ammunition storage facilities in strategic areas to support rapid mobilisation during active military operations. The authorities have also paved the way for reconnaissance and observation flights and helicopter operations to support missions on the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield.

Eastern Ladakh remains a high-priority zone due to continued infrastructure buildup by China. Enhancing connectivity to India’s northernmost military outpost at Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO), near the Karakoram Pass, has also been a key focus. Last month, Ladakh authorities approved improved access routes to key locations such as the Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) huts at DBO and Chushul—sites crucial for maintaining dialogue along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

In addition, infrastructure upgrades including border outposts, troop housing, and road networks in strategically located villages have received state-level approvals. These upgrades aim to improve logistical support and operational readiness along sensitive frontlines.

Several new operational tracks in the Northeast have also been cleared. These include areas in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh where current access is limited to foot travel over several days. On March 25, the Arunachal Pradesh State Board for Wildlife approved road links connecting Malinye to Kapuda and Phuphu. In the Doka La sector—adjacent to the disputed Doklam plateau—plans are underway to construct a new operational track from Bheem Base to Bheem Top. While the Sikkim SBWL is reviewing technical details related to this proposal, it has already cleared air defence installations at Doka La and Bheem Base—considered essential due to increased military activity across the border.

Additionally, the strategic Rishi-Rongli-Kupup road in Sikkim has received the green light, further enhancing India's preparedness in this sensitive region.
