Close to 76,000 positions related to analytics remain to be filled in India, despite a 76 percent jump from last year.

According to the Analytics and Data Science Jobs Survey 2018 by UpGrad,  the banking and financial services industry has seen the maximum demand for data science professionals with, close to 40 percent of the jobs coming from this sector alone, followed by e-commerce.

Data science saw interest from people across verticals. During the year, the online higher education platform saw people from 35 industries enrolling for the postgraduate programme in data science.

About 63 percent of these students were from the IT industry, followed by banking financial services and insurance industry at 12 percent and seven percent from the e-commerce and retail industries.

Jointly conducted with Indian Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore, the first batch had 280 students in May 2016 and now has 800 students in its eighth batch. The programme has seen over 3000 enrolments till date.

“Data science market in India has seen phenomenal growth across sectors with various companies catering to the consumer’s different needs. However, there is a lack of job expertise in this sector. UpGrad’s PG program in data science achieved a pass rate of 81 percent from the learner base, whereas typically paid online programmes pass rate ranges between 30 - 50 percent," said co-founders Ronnie Screwvala and Mayank Kumar.

At the second graduation ceremony of UpGrad at IIIT-Bangalore, over 650 working professionals graduated.

Prof Sadagopan, Director, IIIT Bangalore said, “We have seen great success in helping working professionals learn new-age skills like data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence through the online medium. Over the next five years, we are aiming at upskilling over 10,000 working professionals with a strong focus on career outcomes.”

The students completing the IIITB - UpGrad Data Science program have got placements in top companies such as Infosys, TCS, American Express, Cognizant, KPMG, Bain & Company, Honeywell, Thomson Reuters, Walmart Labs, WNS Global, Oracle, Deloitte, Jabong and Genpact.
