A woman accused of driving the BMW that fatally knocked down a motorcycle rider in the capital has been placed in judicial custody for two days, an official confirmed on Monday.

Police said the woman was taken into custody after being discharged from the hospital earlier in the day.

“The accused woman, Gaganpreet, was produced before the duty magistrate and remanded to two days of judicial custody,” the official stated.

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon near the Delhi Cantonment Metro station on Ring Road. Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Navjot Singh (52), who lived in Hari Nagar, lost his life in the crash, while his wife sustained grievous injuries. The couple was on their way home after paying obeisance at the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara.

According to the police statement, “During investigation, the alleged woman driver of the BMW car, Gagandeep Kaur (38), wife of Parikshit Makkar and a resident of Gurugram, has been arrested in the case.”

Both the accused woman and her husband were also injured in the collision and had been admitted to a hospital. Following her discharge, Gagandeep was detained for questioning and later formally arrested to face further legal proceedings.

The police registered a case of culpable homicide under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 125B (acts endangering life or personal safety of others), 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender).

Meanwhile, the seized BMW and the two-wheeler involved in the fatal mishap have been sent for forensic scrutiny. Investigators also conducted a scientific examination of the accident site, officials added.
