In a murder that left Howrah shocked, a pharmacist and a woman having an extramarital affair were arrested on Saturday for allegedly causing the death of her husband by administering cancer drugs to treat his viral fever.
Nasim Sardar, a garment merchant, had been suffering from viral fever for nearly three weeks. His wife, Sahina Parvin, instead of taking him to a proper medical facility, consulted with Sheikh Morselim, a local pharmacist with whom she was reportedly having an affair, according to a report in The Times of India.
Instead of prescribing medication for viral fever, the TOI report said, Morselim allegedly gave Sahina chemotherapy drugs, which she administered to her husband. As a result, Nasim’s condition deteriorated, and he eventually lost consciousness. He was admitted to a private hospital, where doctors suspected something was wrong when his organs began failing..
Hospital authorities requested to see the previous medications Nasim had taken, but Sahina claimed they had all been consumed. It was later confirmed that the pharmacist had supplied oral chemotherapy drugs, leading to Nasim's multi-organ failure and death on Friday.
As news of Nasim's death spread, enraged neighbours attacked Sahina, accusing her of conspiracy. They handed her over to the police and vandalized and set fire to Morselim’s house, pharmacy, and motorcycle. Police and RAF personnel were deployed to control the situation as tensions escalated.
Police have arrested both Sahina and Morselim, and the victim's viscera will undergo forensic analysis.
