The suicide of Atul Subhash has not only ignited a heated debate about men's rights in the country but also brought attention to the Bengaluru techie's final words, in which he made serious allegations against his wife and in-laws.

Atul detailed his allegations in a 90-minute video and a 24-page suicide note, claiming that he was harassed by his in-laws and wife over alimony.

In a letter, Atul accused his wife, Nikia Singhania, mother-in-law Nisha Singhania, brother-in-law Anurag Singhania and Nikita’s uncle Sushil Singhania of extortion and years of emotional distress.

He said that the alleged harassment ultimately forced him to take the extreme step.

In his note, Atul said that the harassment ranged from physical to mental abuse. He said that his wife made financial demands during the divorce proceedings.

In the suicide note, titled Justice is Due', Atul mentioned the court hearing in March inside the family court judge's cabin. During this hearing, his wife allegedly told him: “Toh tum bhi suicide kyun nahin kar lete (So, why don’t you die by suicide too)?”, to which the judge laughed.

He responded: “Main mar gaya tum logon ki party kaise chalegi (If I die, how will your party go on)?”

The girl's mother then responded, saying: “Tab bhi chalegi. Tumhara baap dega paise. (It will go on. Your father will pay).

Atul alleged that his mother-in-law continued to make threats, adding that whatever a husband owns belongs to his wife after his death. “Tere marne ke baad tere maa-baap bhi jaldi marenge phir. Usme bhi bahu ka hissa hota hai. Puri zindagi tera pura khandan court ke chakkar katega. (Your parents will die soon after you die. And in that too, your wife will have the right to your property. All your family members will be stuck in court proceedings throughout their lives).”

Atul described feeling frustrated and helpless, saying he had become the "source of all evil." He also accused Nisha, Anurag and Sushil Singhania of repeatedly threatening him and his parents, both over the phone and in person. He claimed they threatened to harm them, kill them, and file false cases against his family.

He further alleged that his wife and her family initially demanded Rs 1 crore for a settlement, but the amount increased to Rs 3 crore, with further demands after maintenance for his son was awarded.

He claimed that his wife and mother-in-law often harassed his family, demanding six sarees and a full gold set for every occasion.

“My wife, mother-in-law, and my brother-in-law kept pressuring me for money since early 2020. I sent Rs 3 lakhs on 31st May, 2020, after my wife threatened to leave if I didn’t lend money to my mother-in-law. Around Rs 15 lakh were demanded in March 2021. I sent Rs 9 lakh in March and another Rs 4 lakh on 17th April, 2021,” he said.

Atul later discovered that his wife and mother-in-law planned to use his money to buy a Rs 1 crore house. When he asked for the money back, they demanded an additional Rs 50 lakh and pressured him to invest in a cloud kitchen and buy land in Jaunpur, which he refused, according to the note.

After agreeing to return the money, Atul's wife stopped contact with their son. He alleged that his in-laws launched a smear campaign, claiming he had epilepsy and accused him of domestic violence

Atul also reported an incident when his wife’s friend and her female friends came unannounced to take their belongings and locked his house in his absence. After a disturbance outside his house, Atul called the police, who advised him to hand over his wife’s things. No FIR was filed, and Nikita’s brother continued to harass Atul with unreasonable demands, like publicly apologizing in front of relatives.

Earlier, Nikita's family had refuted the allegations made by Atul and said they were not guilty.

“We are not guilty of what happened. We will come out with all the proof soon. We have done nothing wrong. We regret Atul’s death,” the family of Nikita Singhania was quoted as saying by CNN-News18.

In 2022, Nikita had filed, accusing Atul and his family of dowry harassment under the Dowry Prohibition Act. The complaint also claimed that a further Rs 10 lakh was demanded by Atul’s parents in August 2019, which allegedly contributed to the sudden death of Nikita’s father the following day. Atul's family refuted these claims.

The 34-year-old techie ended his life on Monday in Bengaluru, alleging harassment at the hands of his estranged wife and her family.
