Just weeks after the gang-rape that shook India from West Bengal's Durgapur area, another shocker has now emerged from Uluberia, where a woman doctor has been assaulted. Three people have been arrested in the case.
The woman doctor worked at a state-run hospital and was threatened with rape. The assault comes a year after the shocking rape and murder of a doctor surfaced. The case happened in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal's Kolkata.
The incident happened on Monday at Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Government Medical College and Hospital at Uluberia in Howrah district. Reports said that the accused are relatives of a patient admitted to the hospital.
On Monday afternoon, they had an argument with the doctor and assaulted her. She then filed a complaint against them with the police, following which they were arrested.
A home guard is among the people who have been arrested. The three accused have been identified as Sheikh Samrat, Sheikh Babulal, who is the Home Guard working as a traffic policeman and Sheikh Hasibul.
After the incident, the Joint Forum of Doctors, which is an organisation representing doctors in Bengal, went to the hospital and spoke about the safety of doctors on duty at the hospital.
Meanwhile, this incident has sparked a blame game between the BJP and the TMC. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the Mamata Banerjee government has not learnt any lesson from the RG Kar Medical College incident.
"Trinamool has created a troubled society where perverted Home Guards and civic volunteers are part of the party. They believe it is their government. They do not care about police or administration. There is no CCTV surveillance. It is an unfortunate incident," he said.
