Eight people, including a one-year-old baby, were injured when a four-storey building collapsed in the Welcome area of northeast Delhi on Saturday morning. Some people are still feared to be trapped under the rubble, reported PTI.

The injured include ten members of a family who lived in the building, as well as several others nearby. Eight people have been taken to a hospital for treatment, and rescue efforts are ongoing for those still potentially trapped in the debris.

A senior police officer said, “Around 7:04 am on Saturday, we received information at Welcome Police Station regarding the collapse of a four-storey building near Idgah, Welcome. Upon arrival, the police team found that three storeys of the building had collapsed.” He added that eight injured individuals have been rescued, with seven taken to JPC Hospital and one to GTB Hospital for treatment.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Sandeep Lamba said, “The owner of the building, Matloob, resides there with his family. The ground and first floors of the building are unoccupied. The building opposite also sustained damage.”

Parvez (32), his wife Siza (21), their son Ahmad (14 months), and his brother Naved (19), who were inside the building during the collapse, have been rescued. Govind (60), his brother Ravi Kashyap (27), and their wives Deepa (56) and Jyoti (27), who were outside the building, also suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Anees Ahmad Ansari, who lives in the building opposite the collapsed structure, said he was also injured in the incident. “When the building collapsed, the rubble hit our building, and I got hurt as well. Everyone, including residents, is busy trying to rescue the family. We hope that they are safe,” he said.

The building collapsed while many locals were out for their morning walks, and several individuals acted as first responders, attempting to rescue those trapped before firefighters arrived on the scene. Seven fire tenders were dispatched to the site at Gali No. 5 in Janta Colony, near Idgah Road in Seelampur, for rescue operations, according to Delhi Fire Service Chief Atul Garg.

Asma, a nearby resident, recounted, “Around 7 am, I was in my house when I heard a loud noise, followed by dust swirling everywhere. When I came outside, I saw that our neighbour’s home had collapsed. We don’t know how many people may be trapped, but a family of ten lives there.”
