Dealing with anxiety can be a daunting task. It can fill your mind with negative thoughts, make you feel restless, and drain your energy. To overcome anxiety, you need to address its root causes and restore balance and harmony to your body and mind. Ayurveda, an ancient healing system, can help you do that with natural remedies that are tailored to your body and needs.
Causes of anxiety: Anxiety can have many causes, but it often stems from imbalances in the body's elemental forces, or doshas. One of these doshas is Vata, which is linked to air and space. When Vata gets out of balance, it can make us feel nervous and restless. Ayurvedic remedies can help us calm down our Vata dosha and reduce anxiety in a natural way. Dr Madhumita Krishnan, an Ayurveda expert, explains that there are some proven practices that can restore our nervous system's harmony. "For example, we can apply medicated ghee in our nose or warm oil under our feet, or we can eat some herbs that have adaptogenic properties, like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Brahmi." she says.
"The calming properties of almonds, rich in magnesium and vitamin E, can nourish the nervous system and contribute to overall well-being. Furthermore, the soothing effects of Blue Pea Flower tea can aid in fighting anxiety and boost mental resilience. Balancing the Vata dosha through the consumption of sweet, unctuous, and warming foods complements these approaches," she adds.
Dr Krishnan recommends the following ayurvedic solutions for relief from anxiety:
Nadi shodhana pranayama: An alternate nostril breathing exercise, Nadi Shodhana encourages calmness and balance within. This technique regulates the body's prana, enhances mental clarity and reduces anxiety.
Ashwagandha, shatavari, and brahmi: Including medicinal herbs like Ashwagandha, shatavari, and brahmi into your daily regimen can be of help. These herbs possess calming properties that support the nervous system and aid in reducing stress and anxiety.
Blue pea flower tea: It is known for its natural calming properties. Rich in antioxidants, this vibrant blue tea promotes relaxation and restores equilibrium in the body.
Almond-based diet: Did you know that adding almonds in your diet can help deal with anxiety? Almonds are a natural source of magnesium and vitamin E. Regular consumption of these nuts can enhance the functioning of the nervous system, lessen anxiety and boost mental resilience.
Applying warm medicated oil: The ayurvedic practice of applying warm medicated oil under the feet grounds the body and mind, thus reducing excess Vata dosha associated with anxiety.
Shirodhara or shiropichu: Allow yourself to soak in the therapeutic session such as Shirodhara. It involves a continuous stream of warm, medicated oil on the forehead, or Shiropichu, using a cotton pad soaked in medicated oil.
These practices have a calming effect on the nervous system and further promote relaxation and balance.
