Central trade unions have called an all-India one-day strike at establishments of the state-run Coal India on February 16, a regulatory filing stated.

The announcement assumes significance as the supplies from Coal India, the world's largest coal producer, is crucial for electricity generation. It remains to be seen whether the strike would have any major impact on the supplies to power plants.

"CIL (Coal India Ltd) is in receipt of strike notice regarding one day All India Strike in entire CIL Subsidiaries on February 16," the company informed the exchanges.

The strike notice has been issued by Hind Mazdoor Sangh (HMS), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).

While the regulatory filing did not mention the exact reason behind the strike call, the central trade unions had issued a similar notice for strike in October, when they demanded the company to pay salary to non-executive employees according to National Coal Wage Agreement (NCWA) XI.

The previous strike plan, however, was deferred after a court ordered the company to pay salaries as per the latest wage pact.

In June this year, the coal ministry said it approved a wage revision agreement that was reached with trade unions for non-executive employees of Coal India.

The agreement provides for 19 per cent of the minimum guaranteed benefit from July 1, 2021 on emoluments -- basic, variable dearness allowance (VDA), special dearness allowance (SDA), and attendance bonus -- besides a 25 per cent increase in allowances.

The agreement was reached in May by the Joint Bipartite Committee for the Coal Industry (JBCCI)-XI, consisting of representatives of CIL management, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), the central trade unions, and the Indian National Mine Workers' Federation (INMF).

Coal India's shares edged in the green at the stock markets on February 13. The scrip was valued at Rs 451.50 apiece on the BSE at 2:36 pm, higher by 4.26 percent as against the previous day's close.
