Tata Elxsi has signed a pact with CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL) to explore innovations in emerging areas such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, a company filing said on January 7.

The technology services company is setting up a 'Strategic Partnership for Advanced Air Mobility' to tap into NAL's expertise in aeronautics for global as well as Indian markets, the company said. Tata Elxsi said the partnership with NAL will help accelerate the development of next-generation air mobility solutions. "We believe the future of aerospace innovation lies in technologies like UAVs and Urban Air Mobility," Manoj Raghavan, MD & CEO at Tata Elxsi said.

"CSIR-NAL’s deep expertise in aerospace research and testing, along with Tata Elxsi’s advanced technology and design expertise, will help us to develop innovative, scalable, and sustainable solutions that will shape the future of urban transportation," Abhay A Pashilkar, Director at CSIR-NAL said.

Tata Elxsi also said the global market for UAVs and UAM is 'rapidly evolving', with applications in logistics, agriculture, defence and transport. The MoU will accelerate product development cycles by providing access to advanced testing infrastructure and expertise. The Tata Group company added that India offers 'significant opportunities' for indigenisation under the Make in India programme, and there is a growing demand for advanced air mobility solutions.

As part of the pact, Tata Elxsi and CSIR-NAL will also create an ecosystem for precision manufacturing, bringing together stakeholders for innovation and to address the needs of advanced air mobility.

Shares of Tata Elxsi were higher by up to a percent on January 7, but on a one-year basis, are down by 24%.

Tata Elxsi believes the role of artificial intelligence in eVTOL and flying cars cannot be overstated. "AI is the driving force behind precise navigation, efficient operation, energy management, and enhanced safety, making the vision of urban air mobility a possibility and an imminent reality," the company had said in one of its annual compendiums.
