The shares of smallcap and midcap companies continued to gain sharply on April 23, pushing the smallcap and midcap indices higher into the green for the seventh consecutive session. The Nifty Midcap index closed 1.18 percent higher at 55,041, while Nifty Smallcap index ended the session with marginal gains at 16,969.75.
Waaree Energies shares were the top gainer on the index, rising nearly 15 percent to close at Rs 3,002 apiece. The sharp rise in the share price comes after the company reported a 34 percent jump in net profit to Rs 618.91 crore for the fourth quarter of FY25.
AU Small Finance Bank shares followed, surging nearly 8 percent to close at Rs 662 apiece. Notably, the sharp surge in the bank stock comes after the firm reported a 37 percent rise in net profit to Rs 2,106 crore in FY25.
Motilal Oswal Financial Services shares came next, rising nearly 7 percent. Coforge shares meanwhile jumped over 6 percent. This comes after US President Donald Trump hinted at slashing tariffs on China substantially from 145 percent, easing concerns over the trade war and the resulting possibilities of a US recession. Notably, 48 percent of the company's revenue in financial year 2024 was derived from the American market.
Sona BLW Precision Forgings shares also sharply rose by nearly 6 percent, after the company’s key client Tesla during its post-earnings call said that the production rate of its 'Model Y' has returned back to earlier levels.
Other notable midcap stocks which recorded strong gains include Aurobindo Pharma (up nearly 6 percent), Mphasis (up nearly 5 percent), Alkem Laboratories (up nearly 5 percent), Premier Energies (up over 4 percent), Persistent Systems (up over percent), Ashok Leyland (up over 4 percent), Tata Elxsi (up over 3 percent), BSE (up over 3 percent), Godrej Properties (up nearly 3 percent), Nykaa (up nearly 3 percent), Bharat Forge (up over 2 percent), Tata Tech (up nearly 2 percent), Polycab Wires (up nearly 2 percent), Kalyan Jewellers (up nearly 2 percent), Bharat Dynamics (up over 1 percent), IRCTC (up over 1 percent), Suzlon Energy (up over 1 percent) and others.
Among the smallcap stocks, Inventurus Knowledge Solutions shares were the top gainer, rising nearly 7 percent to close at Rs 1,516.60 apiece. Godfrey Phillips shares meanwhile surged 5 percent to end the session at 7,921.50 apiece. Other smallcap stocks which recorded strong gains included Birla Soft (up over 4 percent), Aditya Birla Real Estate (up over 4 percent), CDSL (up over 3 percent), Cyient (up over 4 percent), Inox Wind (up over 3 percent), MCX (up nearly 3 percent), CAMS (up over 2 percent), Delhivery (up over 2 percent), IRCON (up nearly 2 percent), PVR Inox (up 1.5 percent) and more.
"Markets traded volatile but managed to close higher, continuing the prevailing trend…A mixed trend across sectors kept traders engaged, with IT and auto performing well, while banking and financials witnessed some profit-taking. The broader indices also traded choppily but eventually posted gains in the range of 0.44% to 1.18%," said Ajit Mishra from Religare Broking.
