The final estimates of major crops for the year 2022-23, released by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare put the total production of food grain at a record 329 million tonnes (mt), higher by approximately 14 million tonnes of 315 mt during the season 2021-22.
The total production, however, fell by almost 1 mt compared to the third advanced estimate put out by the agriculture ministry in May.
The total production of rice was estimated at a record 135 mt, which is higher by 6.2 mt than the previous year’s rice production of 12.9 mt and by 15.3 mt than the last five years’ average production of 12 mt.
Production of wheat on the other hand is estimated at a record 110 mt. It is higher by 2.8 mt than the previous year’s production of 10.7 mt and by 4.8 mt than the average wheat production of 10.5 mt.
The Third Advance Estimates of production of wheat and rice had predicted output of 112.74 million tonnes (mt) and 135.54 mt, respectively.
Production of nutri/coarse cereals is estimated at 57.3 mt, which is higher by 6.2 mt than the production of 51.1 mt achieved during 2021-22. Further, it is also higher by 9.2 mt than the average production. Production of shree anna (millets) is estimated at 17.3 mt.
Total pulses production during 2022-23 is estimated at 26 mt, which is higher by 1.4 mt than the last five years’ average pulse production of 24.6 mt.
Total oilseeds production in the country during 2022-23 is estimated at a record 41.3 mt, which is higher by 3.3 mt than the oilseed production during 2021-22. Further, the production of oilseeds during 2022-23 is higher by 7.3 mt than the average oilseeds production of 34 mt.
The total production of sugarcane in the country during 2022-23 is estimated at 490.5 mt. The production of sugarcane during 2022-23 is higher by 51.1 mt than the previous year's sugarcane production of 439.4 mt.
Production of cotton is estimated at 336.60 lakh bales (of 170 kg each) is higher by 25.42 lakh bales than the previous year’s cotton production. Production of jute and mesta is estimated at 93.92 lakh bales (of 180 kg each).
