Production in the factories of Tata Steel and Tata Motors was normal while banking services were badly hit by the one-day nationwide strike called by several trade unions in the mineral-rich Kolhan region, comprising East and West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswan districts of Jharkhand.

Production as well as attendance at Tata Steel and Tata Motors factories were normal during the strike, Amresh Sinha of Corporate Services, Tata Steel and Ranjit Dhar, spokesman of Tata Motors, told PTI.

The banking services were "badly affected" in the three districts by the strike called by the trade unions to press their 12-point charter of demand, including minimum wages, secretary, All India Bank Employees' Association, Jharkhand, R Singh said.

The strike affected transactions worth about Rs 1,200 crore as all the banks, barring one, had joined it, Singh said while accusing the Union government of "overlooking their genuine demands".

President of Adityapur Small Industries Association (ASIA) Inder Agarwal said the strike evoked a "lukewarm" response in the Adityapur industrial area, the largest industrial estate in the eastern region, in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district.

Agarwal said some contract labourers were detained outside the Usha Martin plant at Gamariah, but the production was not affected.

Mining activities in the Kolhan region were "partially affected", sources said.

The administration had made elaborate security arrangements to maintain law-and-order but the strike was largely "incident-free", they added.
