Domestic carrier IndiGo launched 'IndiGo Stretch' business class for 12 routes, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai from mid-November, CEO Pieter Elbers said on August 5 on the occasion of its 18th anniversary as India's topline airline.
The carrier, which eyes to tap growing number of premium flyers domestically, will open business class booking from August 6 for travel from 14 November and fares start at Rs 18,018. IndiGo will also launch "Bluchip' loyalty program, which will start around September.
Further, meals for the premium business class will be catered by Oberoi Hotels.
Speaking at the event, Elbers said, "It's going to be a real good business class."
The business class foray marks a departure in strategy from an all-economy service for the no-frills carrier and represents a sign of growing demand for premium services in the country.
As IndiGo marks its 18th anniversary on August 7, the domestic carrier also announced a discount of up to 18% percent off on flights with the offer valid for the next four days (starting August 5).
“Dear IndiGo Customer, get up to 18% off on flights with the Happy IndiGo Day Sale. Offer valid till 8th August, 2024. Use code 'HAPPY18'” the airline said.
The announcement comes days after Interglobe Aviation Ltd, which runs low-cost airline IndiGo, reported its results for the April to June 2024 quarter in which it saw a 12 percent year-on-year (YoY) decline in net profit at Rs 2,729 crore.
The company's revenue from operations increased 17 percent to Rs 19,571 crore as against Rs 16,683 crore in the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal.
Shares of IndiGo post launch of the business class product today were trading nearly 3 percent down at Rs 4,190.10 apiece on BSE against Nifty 50's 3.22 percent decline.
Sensex, Nifty on August 5 accelerated their slide to nearly 3 percent, in their steepest intra-day drop in two months, but fared better than their Asian peers amid a global sell-off in equities on fears of a slowdown in U.S. economic growth.
The NSE Nifty 50 index slid 2.85% to 24,016.35, as of 11:24 a.m IST and the S&P BSE Sensex dropped 2.85% to 78,681.
