Every year on March 20, the world comes together to celebrate World Happiness Day, a reminder of the importance of joy, well-being, and mental health in our daily lives. Established by the United Nations, this global observance highlights the need for a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable approach to economic growth—one that prioritises happiness and well-being alongside financial prosperity.

The idea of global happiness day originated in Bhutan, a country known for prioritising Gross National Happiness (GNH) over Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Bhutan has long championed a holistic approach to progress, balancing economic growth with cultural, social and environmental well-being.

In 2012, the UN officially declared March 20 as the International Day of Happiness, inspired by Bhutan's model. The first celebration took place in 2013, encouraging nations to focus on policies that enhance people's quality of life.

Why is it important

In a time marked by economic instability, climate change, social inequalities, World Happiness Day urges individuals, governments and organisations to focus on mental health, well-being and human connection.

The World Happiness Report, published annually by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, ranks countries based on social support, life expectancy, income, freedom, generosity, and corruption levels. Nordic nations like Finland, Denmark and Iceland consistently top the list due to strong social systems, work-life balance and trust in governments.

A collective responsibility

The message of World Happiness Day is simple: Happiness isn't just a personal goal—it's a collective responsibility. True progress is measured by well-being and sustainability, not just economic success.

As the world faces global crises, prioritising happiness is more important than ever. Governments, corporations and individuals all have a role in creating a compassionate and mentally healthy society.
