Summer skin care secrets: Heat can take a toll on your skin, here's how to keep it healthy and glowing

Skincare tips: Caring for your skin involves both external and internal approaches. While adopting a gentle skincare regimen and applying sunscreen protect your skin from external factors like heat, it's equally important to nourish your skin from within by consuming a balanced diet and staying hydrated.

During the warmer months, extended sun exposure can lead to skin problems such as irritation, sunburn, and premature ageing, necessitating a regular skincare regimen. Essential preventive measures include using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and maintaining hydration levels.

Additionally, consuming a balanced diet rich in antioxidants can help support skin health by reducing oxidative stress caused by sun exposure.
The skin reflects the body’s internal health, therefore what you eat is equally important, says Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, Skin care expert and Cosmetologist. “With temperatures soaring, it’s crucial to focus on the right diet, by introducing plenty of fruits, vegetables, natural replenishing drinks, and nuts to your everyday meal. Additionally, ensuring sun protection, optimal hydration, and proper skincare, are also essential,” she adds.

Here are ways you can keep your skin radiant and glowing during the summers:

Fruits and vegetables: What goes inside the body matters far more than external skin treatments. Always eat a clean and balanced diet. It is advised to include fruits such as watermelon, berries, and oranges, and vegetables like cucumber in your diet.

Almonds and walnuts: Almonds are extremely beneficial and contribute to your skin health and well-being. They are great for skin health, rich in vitamin E for UV protection, copper for pigmentation, and linoleic acid to prevent dryness. Walnuts, with twice the antioxidant polyphenols of other nuts, combat free radicals and protect cells. They also contain anti-inflammatory omega-3s and linoleic acid, which regulates sebum and supports the skin barrier.

Stay hydrated : It is extremely important to ensure optimum water intake during the summer to avoid dehydration. Water is necessary for temperature regulation, maintaining cell balance, transporting nutrients, and optimal circulatory system performance, all of which impact the skin as well. Additionally, you can consume water-rich fruits and vegetables and carry electrolytes in your bag to stay hydrated all day long.

Sun protection: Sun protection is essential to shield the skin from harmful UV rays. Wearing protective hats and sunglasses along with choosing the right sunscreen, is crucial in the summer. Opt for a sunscreen with at least SPF 30. However, sunscreen should be chosen based on skin texture and tone, so it's advisable to consult an expert before making a purchase.

Cleanse and exfoliate: Maintaining healthy and radiant skin during the summer requires a daily skincare routine that includes gentle cleansing and exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and prevent pore congestion from sweat buildup. It's vital to choose products tailored to your skin type to avoid harshness and maintain balance. Opting for lightweight and gentle skincare formulations allows your skin to breathe, preventing pore congestion and promoting overall skin health.
