With Diwali just a couple of weeks away, the age-old tradition of deep cleaning takes center stage, symbolising the removal of the old to make way for the new. This annual ritual goes beyond tidying up; it’s an opportunity to refresh your space and create a warm, inviting atmosphere for the festivities.

For Diwali every corner of your home is sparkling clean and you can breathe new life into your surroundings, setting the perfect backdrop for the celebrations ahead. “Diwali is the best excuse to give your home a style upgrade,” says Shailly Mandiwal, Country Home Furnishing Direction Leader at IKEA India. “It’s not just about deep cleaning or rearranging; it’s also about adding those extra little touches that bring the energy and magic of Diwali right into your space,” she adds.

Whether you prefer minimalism or enjoy an eclectic mix of styles, Mandiwal suggests some super easy ways to give your home a festive facelift just in time for the celebrations:

  • Create magical Instagram spots with layered lighting: Diwali is all about lighting, so illuminate your home from the entrance to Instagram-worthy spots like windows and balconies, perfect for capturing beautiful moments with friends and family. Layer different light sources for a stunning effect by combining traditional clay diyas with LED candles and twinkling fairy lights for a playful vibe. Stick to warm tones such as gold, white, or yellow for a classic festive glow. If you have a floor lamp you’ve been eyeing, now’s the time to bring it out! For a unique touch, mix various shapes and forms of string lights with real or artificial flowers to create an earthy, festive look. Use scented candles to add warmth and ambiance, and craft DIY lanterns using mason jars filled with fairy lights and decorative accents like flowers or pebbles for a personal touch.

  • Diwali dinner with a stunning table setting: The dining table is the heart of Diwali celebrations, where family and friends gather to share meals and create lasting memories. For a vibrant setting, use a warm-toned runner and add candles or lanterns for a soft, festive glow. Choose neutral dinnerware paired with bold napkins for contrast, while reflective glassware enhances the ambiance. Small potted plants or flowers can add a fresh touch. Keep the décor clean, stylish, and festive with subtle yet impactful accents.

  • Bring in greenery and fragrance for a fresh touch: Include plants and natural elements into your Diwali decor to bring nature indoors. Fresh flowers, potted plants, or hanging greens add a vibrant and lively touch to the festivities. Enhance your entrance or center tables with fragrant potpourris, creating an inviting and aromatic atmosphere for guests. Elevate your rangoli by using flowers or leaves, blending the beauty of nature with traditional designs for a modern, organic twist.

  • Liven up the living room with patterned cushions and rugs: Give your living space an instant festive upgrade by introducing bold, patterned rugs and cushions. Opt for designs that create an inviting, luxurious vibe, think rich patterns and textures that make the room feel vibrant and lively. Layer different rug textures for a welcoming look that feels both refined and comfortable. Cushions with bold patterns like block prints or ikat will infuse energy into the space, while neutral furniture keeps the overall feel balanced. Don’t hesitate to mix and match patterns, the more eclectic the style, the more dynamic and festive the atmosphere.
  • Upcycle your decor for a unique jugaadu twist: Diwali doesn’t have to mean buying new decor. Try upcycling old household items for a creative, eco-friendly twist. Turn unused glass bottles into stylish vases, or repaint old picture frames and fill them with festive artwork or family photos. These small details add a personalised touch to your home.
