Endometriosis, a chronic estrogen-dependent condition, occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the womb. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), despite its name, endometriosis can affect various organs, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and even the gastrointestinal tract. The exact cause remains unclear, but theories suggest retrograde menstruation, immune system dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, and genetic predisposition play roles.

Preventive measures and protective factors for endometriosis

Keep your weight in check: Obesity can exacerbate endometriosis symptoms due to increased estrogen levels. Aim for a balanced diet and regular exercise to manage weight and hormonal balance.

Limit alcohol and caffeine: Both substances can trigger inflammation and hormonal fluctuations, worsening endometriosis symptoms. Moderation is key to minimising their impact.

Manage stress: Chronic stress can worsen inflammation and pain perception. Incorporate stress-reducing activities like meditation, yoga, or hobbies to improve overall well-being.

Avoid environmental toxins: Certain chemicals found in pesticides, plastics, and household products can disrupt hormone levels and exacerbate endometriosis. Opt for organic produce and environmentally friendly products whenever possible.

Parity and breastfeeding: Parity (having children) and protracted breastfeeding are associated with decreased risk. Breastfeeding suppresses endometriosis development through postpartum amenorrhea and other mechanisms.

Contraceptive use and tubal ligation: Current oral contraceptive use and tubal ligation are also  linked to reduced risk. Tubal ligation hampers menstrual reflux, lowering the chance of endometriosis.

Impact of ovulation: Ovulation triggers inflammation and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributing to endometriosis development.

Lifestyle factors: Primary amenorrhea, physical activity, and dietary/lifestyle habits affect risk. Factors like increased omega-3 fatty acid intake and smoking are associated with decreased endometriosis risk. While smoking harms almost every part of the body, but it doesn't have the same negative impact on endometriosis.

Visit your doctor: Schedule routine gynecological exams to detect endometriosis early and monitor its progression. Early intervention can prevent complications and improve outcomes.
