You’re in your 30s or 40s, busy with work and life, when suddenly you get sharp back pain, a strange chest pull, or a sinking feeling. In such cases most blame stress or indigestion—but doctors warn these could be signs of something serious, even deadly.
When a young person comes in with strange chest or back pain, we don’t always assume it’s the heart,” says Dr Rajneesh Malhotra, Max Healthcare, Delhi. “But we should. Sometimes it’s the aorta, that big blood vessel running from your heart, and it can tear or bulge without warning.” A quick scan, like a CT or echo, could catch it before it turns life-threatening. He adds, “We’re seeing more people in their 30s and 40s coming in late, when it’s almost too late.”
Many patients ignore early signs, says Dr Zainulabedin Hamdulay, Chairman and Director, Masina Heart Institute & GHC Hospital , Mumbai. “They think it’s just acidity or stress,” he explains. “But it could be a silent aneurysm or a tear in the aorta.” These problems can start silently—with dull pain, shortness of breath, or even hoarseness. “By the time it gets sharp or unbearable, precious time may have been lost,” He stresses the importance of listening to your body. “If something feels off, especially with pain and dizziness, don’t brush it off", says Dr Hamdulay.

Dr Hamdulay and Dr Malhotra share 6 signs your body might be waving a red flag:
Understand the pain: Chest or back pain that feels dull, pulling, or suddenly sharp, can be a red flag. It may not be your usual muscle ache. Pay attention.
Feeling strangely uneasy: If you feel like something’s just wrong, get it checked immediately. That sinking feeling matters. Don’t ignore it.
Shortness of breath or hoarseness: If you notice your voice changing or finding it hard to breathe, it could be a sign that something’s pressing inside.
Brain fog or confusion: If you're struggling to focus or feel off-balance, it might be low blood flow to your brain. Consult a doctor.
Pain while resting: If you experience pain without moving or exercising, know that that’s not normal. Especially if the pain is in the chest or upper back.
