Cataracts are caused due to clouding of the natural lens in the eye. These are often age-related and impair clear vision. They are responsible for blurry vision, glare, and poor night vision. Factors like prolonged exposure to UV light, smoking, diabetes, and genetic predisposition can increase the risk of catracts. Proper care after surgery helps in the minimisation of these symptoms and support for a smoother recovery.

Post-cataract surgery care is critical to ensure a successful recovery and optimal visual outcomes, says Dr Puneet Jain, Senior Consultant, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals. “The procedure, which replaces the clouded lens of the eye with an artificial one, is highly effective. However, the healing process demands meticulous adherence to post-operative guidelines to reduce complications and promote recovery,” he adds.

After a cataract surgery, Dr Jain lists the following dos and don’ts for safer, faster recovery:

Essential do’s post cataract surgery:

Medication: Strict adherence to prescribed medication regimens is critical. Patients are typically given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops to prevent infection and control inflammation. These medications are essential in the delicate post-surgery period, as they help safeguard against complications such as infections or prolonged inflammation.

Protection: The use of an eye shield is recommended, especially during sleep, to prevent inadvertent contact or pressure on the operated eye. During waking hours, sunglasses provide necessary protection against UV radiation and environmental irritants like dust and wind, which could exacerbate post-operative sensitivity.

Hygiene: It plays a pivotal role in recovery. It is imperative that hands are thoroughly cleaned before touching the eye area, especially when administering eye drops. For cleaning the eye, only use sterile gauze or cotton dipped in boiled, cooled water. This practice helps prevent any introduction of contaminants that could cause infection.

Critical don’ts post cataract surgery:

Keep your hands off: Rubbing your eyes is a strict prohibition. Such actions can disrupt the delicate healing tissues, introduce pathogens, and potentially lead to serious infections.

Wear no make-up: The use of eye makeup should be avoided for at least four weeks post-surgery. Doing so  helps to prevent any foreign bodies from entering the eye and causing irritation or infection.

Avoid exertion: Engaging in strenuous activities is another area of concern. Physical exertion, including heavy lifting or intense exercise, can increase intraocular pressure, thereby complicating the healing process.

No swimming: Patients should also steer clear of swimming and hot tubs during the initial recovery period, typically four to six weeks, to avoid exposure to waterborne bacteria that could infect the eye.

Refrain from driving: Driving should be postponed until the ophthalmologist confirms that vision has stabilised and meets legal driving requirements. This precaution is vital to ensure safety, as fluctuating visual acuity can pose a hazard.
