The monsoon season is here! It brings pleasant breezes, vibrant green landscapes, and the gentle sound of rain! But for some it brings hair fall as a concern due to hair increasing loss. Your increased hair fall isn’t all in your head; the increased humidity and dampness in the air during the rainy season can negatively impact scalp health and weaken hair roots, making hair more prone to falling.

Dr. Rhea Luthra, a dermatologist and trichologist based in Mumbai, says "It is extremely common to have hair fall in monsoon, but it can be greatly mitigated through timely care and natural home remedies on a regular basis." Rainwater can often be dirty, and added humidity means an increased chance for fungal growth and scalp infections.

With the added effect of poor eating habits and inconsistency you put your hair at even greater risk for hair fall, typically when it rains. Below are 8 of the most common reasons we see hair fall across the rainy season and natural ways to prevent it.

Why it occurs: Constant exposure to moisture leaves your scalp damp, weakening hair follicles.

Natural remedy: Use aloe vera gel on your scalp once a week. Aloe vera will absorb moisture and helps strengthen roots naturally.

Rainwater is Mostly Acidic or Contaminate:

Why it occurs: Rainwater can contain pollution in the city that can irritate the scalp and damage the hair shaft.

Natural remedy: If rainwater gets in your hair, rinse it off with clean water right away. Wash your hair with a neem infused herbal shampoo to cleanse the scalp.

Fungal Infections Increase:

Why it occurs: You are breeding fungi when your scalp is moist, especially if your hair is wet for an extended period of time.

Natural remedy: Apply a mixture of coconut oil and a few drops of tea tree oil twice a week. Coconut oil and tea tree oil both have fungal killing properties.

Sweat and Dirt Accumulation:

Why it's happening: Sweat collects environmental contaminants that can clog up the pores in the scalp, creating further hair loss.

Natural fix: Clean your hair 2–3 times a week using a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo, and rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar to help clean your scalp.

Less Sunshine Means Weaker Hair:

Why it's happening: When you're outside even less when it's cooler, your vitamin D levels may go down affecting overall hair strength and growth.

Natural fix: Foods containing vitamin D like eggs and mushrooms, or be in the sunlight for morning time for 10–15 seconds will boost your vitamin D.

Poor Eating in the Monsoon:

Why it's happening: We typically eat more oil and fried foods when dealing with rain, missing out on essential nutrients.

Natural fix: You can include foods rich in zinc like nuts, iron like lentils and amla (Indian Gooseberries) and eat spinach cultivated in the time of rain, to nourish your hair from the inside.

Hair styling and heat tools:

Why does it happen: You use hairdryers and styling tools on already weakened hair.

Natural remedy: Let it air dry and use a wide-toothed wooden comb; apply onion juice on a weekly basis to improve follicle health.

Washing hair too frequently or not frequently enough:

Why does it happen: You over wash your hair and strip it of natural oils, or you don’t wash your hair frequently enough to get rid of sweat and grime.

Natural remedy: A reasonable routine would be washing your hair every 2 to 3 days or more, and using herbal hair packs, like hibiscus or methi seeds, on those off days.
