ChatGPT is moving from product discovery to direct purchasing with the launch of Instant Checkout, a new feature powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol built with Stripe. Starting today, US-based ChatGPT users across Free, Plus, and Pro tiers can buy items from Etsy sellers directly inside chat. Support for more than a million Shopify merchants, including brands like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori, is coming soon.

At launch, Instant Checkout supports single-item purchases, with multi-item carts and expanded regional availability on the roadmap. For shoppers, the flow is seamless: after asking a question like “best running shoes under $100,” relevant results appear in chat. If a product supports Instant Checkout, users can hit “Buy,” confirm details, and pay without leaving the app. ChatGPT subscribers can use their stored payment method, while all users can pay via card or express payment options.

Behind the scenes, merchants remain fully in control. Orders, fulfillment, and customer support are handled using their existing systems. ChatGPT simply acts as an AI-powered personal shopper, securely passing order and payment details. Merchants pay a small fee per completed transaction, while users pay no extra charges, and product rankings remain unsponsored and relevance-driven.

Central to this rollout is the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard designed to let AI agents, businesses, and people collaborate on purchases. Co-developed with Stripe and select partners, the protocol is platform-agnostic, works with different payment processors, and requires minimal backend changes. Stripe merchants can enable agentic payments with a single line of code, while others can integrate via Stripe’s new Shared Payment Token API or the Delegated Payments Spec.

The decision to open-source the protocol signals OpenAI’s ambitions for a broader agentic commerce ecosystem, where any developer or retailer can integrate. For merchants, it’s an opportunity to tap into ChatGPT’s massive weekly user base of over 700 million people. For consumers, it’s the beginning of a future where asking ChatGPT for product advice leads not just to recommendations—but to instant purchases.
