The youngest generation of workers are the Gen Z employees, born roughly between 1997 and 2012, who are entering the workforce with their unique challenges and perspectives. This is the first generation brought up completely at ease with technology, and while they spend a lot of time on the internet, they are not necessarily equipped to deal with the stress and anxiety that comes with it.

As a generation, Gen Z are more empathetic about the world, looking to make a difference globally, and their work ethics also speak the same language. They expect more inclusivity, openness and honesty from their employers, including about mental health issues.

As employers, understanding and addressing their mental health issues will foster a healthy, productive workplace for this new generation of workers.

Understanding the mental health landscape

Since Gen Z was raised surrounded by technology, they are the first real digital natives. They frequently post on social media, which can present many mental health issues. According to reports, Gen Z is more depressed and anxious than other generations.

According to a recent Deloitte study, 40 percent of Gen Z workers say they experience anxiety. These mental health issues are greatly exacerbated by elements like social media pressure, unstable economies, and international crises.

Creating a supportive work environment

  • Open communication channels: Gen Z expect authenticity in open and honest communication, especially at the workplace. Unlike older generations who may have internalized stress or suppressed emotions in the workplace, Gen Z wants to have honest conversations with their employers about how they feel and expect companies to provide a supportive environment where health is prioritized. Encourage staff members to express their concerns openly and without judgment. Frequent check-ins and feedback meetings can aid in the early detection of problems.

  • Flexible work arrangements: Gen Z workers value flexibility and place great importance at a work-life balance. They view their jobs more wholistically than the previous generations. Providing flexible scheduling or remote work choices can reduce stress and help staff members better manage their mental health. According to a Harvard Business Review research, working remotely can boost mental health, particularly for people in high-stress positions.

  • Encouraging work-life balance: Burnout can be avoided by encouraging workers to unplug after work. A more encouraging environment can be created for all employees by putting in place rules that encourage a good work-life balance, including mandated time off or no email after hours.

  • Mental health resources: Despite growing awareness around mental health issues, the Deloitte report suggests that almost 25 percent of Gen Z employees feels there is a stigma at their workplace to openly discuss mental health concerns. For instance, when needing to take time off while experiencing anxiety or emotional distress, many Gen Z workers prefer to cite physical illness to justify taking leave.

Employees can gain a great deal by having access to mental health resources including wellness initiatives and counselling services. Employees should be encouraged to take time off without feeling stigmatized, as promoted by companies like Google and Microsoft. Talking about mental health in the workplace can become more commonplace with this proactive approach.

  • Training for managers: Managers who receive mental health education will be better able to identify symptoms of distress in their staff members and be prepared to offer the right kind of support. Employee perceptions of company culture can be significantly impacted by training programs that concentrate an emphasis on empathy and active listening.

According to an Oxford study, “organisation-level initiatives such as improvements in scheduling change, management practices, staff resources or tailored job design” can address mental health issues at the workplace more effectively.
  • Building a community: Creating a sense of community within the workplace can combat feelings of isolation and anxiety. Team-building activities, mentorship programs, and employee resource groups can foster connections among employees, making them feel more supported and engaged.

Addressing mental health issues among Gen Z employees requires a multifaceted approach that emphasises communication, flexibility, and support.
