Ever experienced red, itchy eyes, or a burning sensation that refuses to go away? These symptoms might point to conjunctivitis or other inflammatory eye conditions. In Ayurveda, eye health is closely tied to the balance of your body's doshas, particularly the Pitta dosha, which governs heat and metabolism.

When Pitta is out of balance, it can lead to inflammation and discomfort in the eyes, says Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, Director of Dr. Basu Eye Hospital. “An imbalance in Pitta dosha often leads to inflammatory conditions like conjunctivitis. To keep your eyes healthy and inflammation-free, Ayurveda offers a range of holistic remedies focusing on diet, lifestyle, and natural treatments,” he adds.

Dr Basu further explains how you can use Ayurvedic principles to prevent inflammatory eye conditions:

Cooling foods: In Ayurveda, diet plays a vital role in balancing the Pitta dosha and soothing inflammation. To achieve this, add cooling foods such as cucumbers and pomegranates into your diet. Cucumbers have a natural cooling effect that helps reduce internal heat and calm irritated eyes. Pomegranates, on the other hand, are packed with antioxidants that combat oxidative stress and aid in balancing Pitta dosha, further supporting eye health.

Hydration: Staying hydrated is key to preventing Pitta aggravation, which can cause dryness and irritation in the eyes. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain proper hydration. Additionally, herbal teas such as coriander and fennel are especially effective due to their cooling properties, helping to soothe and support eye health.

Herbal eyewash: Natural cleansers are effective for maintaining eye health and preventing infections. Triphala, a traditional Ayurvedic formulation, is particularly useful. To use it, soak Triphala powder in water overnight, strain the mixture, and use the resulting liquid as an eyewash. This practice helps to soothe and cleanse the eyes, supporting eye health.

Eye exercises: Eye exercises can enhance vision and alleviate inflammation. Trataka, a candle-gazing exercise, is especially beneficial. By focusing on the flame of a candle, Trataka helps clear blocked tear ducts and reduces eye strain, contributing to eye health and comfort.

Lifestyle adjustments: Modern habits can strain the eyes, however Ayurveda offers simple solutions:

Proper sleep: Ensure you get enough restful sleep to help your eyes recover.
Reduce screen time:: Minimise screen time, especially before bed, to prevent digital eye strain.

Netra prakshalana: This Ayurvedic practice involves washing the eyes with herbal decoctions to support eye health. Daily rinsing with Triphala water or rose water helps cleanse the eyes and reduce inflammation, providing soothing relief and maintaining eye wellness.
