Tea is one of the most beloved beverages worldwide, cherished not only for its soothing flavours but also for its remarkable health benefits. Tea has become an integral part of many cultures and traditions, enjoyed in various forms such as green, black, white, oolong, and herbal teas. Each type of tea offers a unique profile of flavours and health-promoting compounds.

Here are health benefits of incorporating tea in your daily diet listed by Delhi based nutritionist Piyali Khurrana.

Rich in antioxidants: Tea, particularly green and white varieties, is loaded with antioxidants such as polyphenols and catechins. These compounds play a crucial role in protecting cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. By reducing oxidative stress, these antioxidants help lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Boosts heart health: Regular consumption of tea is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases. The flavonoids found in tea can help improve heart health by reducing levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and increasing HDL (good) cholesterol.

Supports weight management: Certain types of tea, especially green tea, have been shown to aid in weight management. The catechins in green tea, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), boost metabolism and enhance fat oxidation, helping the body burn fat more efficiently.

Enhances mental alertness: Tea contains a unique combination of caffeine and L-theanine. Caffeine is a well-known stimulant that can improve alertness and concentration. L-theanine, an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea, promotes relaxation and increases alpha brain wave activity, which is associated with a state of calm yet focused alertness. Together, these compounds enhance cognitive function without the jitteriness often associated with high caffeine intake from other sources like coffee.

Reduces stress: The calming properties of L-theanine extend beyond cognitive benefits. This amino acid can help reduce stress and promote a sense of relaxation. It does so by modulating levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which influence mood and stress levels.

Improves gut health: The polyphenols in tea act as prebiotics, substances that nourish and stimulate the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. A healthy gut microbiome is essential for proper digestion, immune function, and overall health. By supporting the growth of good bacteria, tea can help maintain a balanced gut flora, which is crucial for preventing digestive issues and enhancing nutrient absorption.

Lowers risk of certain cancers: Research suggests that the antioxidants in tea may have protective effects against certain types of cancer. The polyphenols in tea can inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in tumors.

Supports immune function: Tea contains compounds like catechins and flavonoids that boost the immune system. These substances can enhance the activity of immune cells, such as T cells and natural killer cells, which are crucial for defending the body against infections and illnesses. By improving immune function, regular tea consumption can help the body more effectively combat pathogens and maintain overall health.
