Noise and air pollution are major contributors to a range of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) health problems. Starting from the constant hum of traffic, industrial sounds, to the fine particulate matter in the air, your ENT system is constantly exposed to potential harm.

If you’ve ever felt a dull ache in your ears after exposure to loud environments, or noticed increased congestion after spending time outdoors, you know first-hand how pollution affects the body, says Dr Manika Saluja Parekh, Senior ENT Specialist, HearClear India. “Symptoms like ear ringing, nasal irritation, sore throat, or difficulty breathing can become more frequent with prolonged exposure to noise and air pollution. These discomforts may seem small. However, if left unchecked, they can turn into serious health concerns,” she adds.

Your ears, nose, and throat are interconnected, and they play essential roles in protecting your respiratory system and maintaining balance. “Long-term exposure to air and noise pollution can lead to irreversible damage, affecting your hearing, breathing, and quality of life,” says Dr Parekh.

She suggests the following tips on how to protect your ENT system:

Protecting your ears

  • Avoid loud noise: Constant exposure to high-decibel sounds, especially in urban environments, can lead to hearing loss over time. Staying away from loud noise sources is vital, whether it’s heavy traffic, construction sites, or industrial zones. Using ear protection when exposure is unavoidable can also prevent hearing damage.

  • Don't over-clean: It’s tempting to use cotton swabs to clean your ears, especially when they feel blocked due to air pollution. However, this can push earwax deeper into the ear canal, leading to buildup and potential infections. Clean your outer ear with a soft cloth, and if wax buildup persists, consult an ENT specialist.

Protecting your nose
  • Wear protective masks: Air pollution is filled with harmful particles that can irritate your respiratory system and give rise to conditions like asthma. Wearing a mask designed to filter out dust, smoke, and allergens can provide an extra layer of protection. These masks help prevent pollutants from entering your nose and lungs.

  • Practice nasal hygiene: Nasal saline rinses can clear debris, allergens, and pollutants that accumulate in your nose. Regular use of a saline solution helps to keep your nasal passages clean, reduce inflammation, and reduce congestion, especially in polluted environments.

Protecting your throat
  • Avoid cold beverages: Cold drinks can irritate an already sensitive throat, especially in polluted conditions. Opt for warm beverages, like herbal tea, which can soothe irritation and promote a healthy throat.

  • Stay hydrated: Proper hydration keeps the mucous membranes in your throat moist, thus preventing dryness and irritation. Drinking water throughout the day not only helps to ease discomfort but also supports your body in flushing out pollutants.
