Dragon fruit, with its vibrant pink skin and speckled white or red flesh, is more than just an eye-catching exotic fruit — it's packed with essential nutrients that support digestion, immunity and heart health. However, despite its many benefits, it may not be suitable for everyone.
To understand the advantages and potential risks of eating dragon fruit, we spoke to Shubha Ramesh L, senior dietician at DHEE Hospitals, Bengaluru, who shares insights on how this superfruit affects the body.
1. Gut-friendly prebiotic power
Dragon fruit is rich in prebiotic fibre, particularly oligosaccharides, which fuel beneficial gut bacteria. "This fruit supports digestion, helps reduce bloating, and promotes a healthy gut microbiome," explains Ramesh, adding, "A strong gut microbiome is crucial for overall health and immunity."
2. Strengthens the immune system
Loaded with vitamin C and flavonoids, dragon fruit helps strengthen the immune system and fight infections. "Vitamin C acts as a potent antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation—key factors in chronic diseases," says Ramesh.

3. Promotes heart health
Dragon fruit is packed with magnesium, fibre and antioxidants that support cardiovascular function. "The betalains in red-fleshed dragon fruit may help lower bad cholesterol (LDL), while the omega-3 fatty acids in its seed contribute to improved heart health," Ramesh explains.
4. Hydration and electrolyte balance
With over 80 percent water content, dragon fruit is a great way to stay hydrated. "It replenishes electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, making it an ideal post-workout snack," Ramesh notes.
5. Helps regulate blood sugar
Dragon fruit's polyphenols and fibre may help stabilise blood sugar levels by slowing glucose absorption. "Some studies indicate that dragon fruit can improve insulin sensitivity, which is beneficial for people at risk of diabetes," Ramesh adds.
