Do you spend a lot of time on computer screen? Here's why you should worry about tech neck

The persistent pain and discomfort brought on by extended use of electronic gadgets, especially smartphones, is referred to as "tech neck." People who spend a lot of time bent over computer screens unintentionally strain their necks, which can result in a variety of musculoskeletal problems. Tech neck is a condition that develops from using a smartphone in a forward-leaning or downward-leaning posture that alters the cervical spine's normal curve, says Dr Amod Manocha, Director, International Pain Centre, Delhi. Although the average human head weighs 10 to 12 pounds, the pressure on the neck increases significantly when the head tilts forward. For example, the head can press the cervical spine with up to sixty pounds when it is at a sixty-degree angle. This abnormal posture has the potential to cause nerve compression, disc herniation, and muscular tension over time.

Symptoms of tech neck

Tech neck symptoms might range from a little discomfort to excruciating pain, says Dr Manocha. Typical signs and symptoms include:

Neck pain: A chronic pain in the neck that frequently feels stiff.

Shoulder pain: As a result of the strain, the shoulder muscles may get stiff and tense.

Headaches: Tension headaches frequently cause pain in the back of the head and neck.

Numbness and tingling: Prolonged nerve compression may result in hands and arms feeling numb or tingly.

Reduced mobility: Tightness and difficulty moving the neck freely are common symptoms of reduced mobility.

Preventing and treating tech neck

It's critical to pay attention to your posture when using electronic gadgets in order to avoid tech neck. Here are some pointers:

Raise your screen: Avoid bending your neck by keeping your smartphone at eye level.

Take breaks: To release tense muscles, stretch and alternate postures on a regular basis.

Strengthen your muscles: Posture-maintaining exercises targeting the neck and upper back muscles can be beneficial.

Employ ergonomic equipment: To maintain a natural posture, think about utilising ergonomic chairs and stands.
