Dr Lengade suggests the following key steps to manage CKD effectively
Set clear health goals: Keeping blood pressure and blood sugar levels under control is essential. “Aim for a blood pressure below 140/90 mm hg and maintain blood glucose within the recommended range. These targets may vary based on personal conditions, hence it's important to consult your doctor," advises Dr Lengade.
Adopt a kidney-friendly diet: What you eat has a direct impact on kidney health. Focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plant-based proteins. Limit processed foods, salt, and sugar.
Stay active: Physical activity improves your health and helps manage weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. "Even a simple 30-minute walk five days a week can make a difference," says Dr Lengade. “For those with mobility issues or advanced CKD, low-impact exercises like yoga or cycling may be better options,” he says.

Avoid nephrotoxic substances: Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen and naproxen can harm your kidneys, especially with prolonged use. "Always consult your doctor before taking any medication, even if it's available without a prescription," cautions Dr Lengade.
Hydrate wisely: Staying hydrated is important, but too much water can lead to complications for people with advanced CKD. "Consult your nephrologist to determine your ideal fluid intake. The key to managing CKD lies in taking proactive steps, no matter how small, to improve your lifestyle and health. Early intervention, combined with ongoing research and healthcare access, can help improve the quality of life for those living with this condition," Dr Lengade says.
