Chikungunya cases have gone out of control in China, with more than 7,000 cases reported in just a few weeks. The outbreak, with its epicentre in Foshan city in Guangdong province, has thrown the healthcare infrastructure into chaos, and authorities are trying to control the disease from spreading.

While this disease is rarely lethal, symptoms of chikungunya include severe joint pain, high fever, and rash. Young children and elderly individuals are particularly at risk because of their weaker immune systems. Says Dr Meera Khanna, an infectious disease expert in Mumbai, “Chikungunya spreads through mosquito bites, and prevention is the most effective defense.”

Aedes mosquitoes are carriers of the Chikungunya virus, and they are most active during the daytime, especially in the morning and late afternoon. As the Ministry of Health reports, “Aedes mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and are closely associated with human habitation.” Knowing the behaviour of mosquito carriers allows for targeted prevention measures to be taken.

How to Use Mosquito Repellents

Apply adequate amount of mosquito repellent to exposed skin before going outside. Buy products that contain one of the following chemical substances: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, eucalyptus oil, or para-menthane-diol. It is critical to purchase a repellent suitable for your child’s age. Never spray repellent directly on to young child's faces or near their eyes and mouths. Use repellent only on their hands and then spread it over their neck and face.

Wear Protective Clothing

Cover your child in light-coloured clothing that covers their arms and legs. Mosquitoes do not like lighter colours and are less attracted to them. Layered clothing prevents them from biting the skin.

Make Indoor Areas Mosquito-Proof

For example, install mosquito nets on windows and outside doors. Use Baygon sprays and vaporisers to kill these pests. The latter can also be beneficial for kids. Do not forget to place a net over children’s cots during napping time or overnight.

Remove Stagnant Water

Even a small puddle of stagnant water is enough for Chikungunya mosquitoes to breed. Empty your flower pots, bucket trays, bird baths, coolers, AC trays, pet bowls, and other water containers at least once a week. Cover or replace containers.

Hydrate and Fortify Your Immune System

Drink plenty of fluids to help your body resist infection. Offer your child water, coconut water, juice, soup, oral rehydration solution, etc. Make sure their menu contains foods and probiotics rich in vitamin C, fruits, and vegetables.
