Breast milk is a natural way to feed a newborn baby. It provides the necessary nutritional components and also supports immunity. Feeding your baby, typically every 2-3 hours, is important. Babies wake up naturally when they feel hungry, but understanding the other signs is also important. These may include rooting, sucking on their hands, or making sucking noises. Always keep a record of your baby's feeding patterns, and make sure they gain weight appropriately, which is a sign that they are getting enough milk.

Apart from eating a balanced diet, and finding a comfortable and quiet place to nurse your baby, there are a few things that you should keep in mind to breastfeed your baby right, says Dr Renu Sehgal, Chairperson, Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Daffodils by Artemis, Delhi.

“Breastfeeding is a beautiful and rewarding experience, but it can also be challenging. By following some simple strategies you can easily overcome the common challenges.” she adds.

Sehgal suggests 5 tips to help you overcome the hurdles and enjoy your breastfeeding journey:

Master the latch: A correct latch is vital for comfortable breastfeeding. If your baby isn't latching properly, it can lead to sore nipples and insufficient milk transfer. Seek help from a lactation consultant to ensure your baby is latching correctly. Key signs of a good latch include:

  • Your baby's mouth is wide open.
  • Your baby's chin touches your breast.
  • Your baby's ears are in line with your nipple.
  • You feel a gentle tugging sensation, not pain.
Proper nipple care: Sore nipples are a common complaint in the early days of breastfeeding. To soothe discomfort, apply lanolin or breast milk to your nipples after feeding. Avoid using harsh soaps or alcohol on your nipples.

Build your milk supply: Having a good milk supply is essential for successful breastfeeding. Frequent feeding, skin-to-skin contact, and pumping can help increase milk production. Eat a balanced diet and ensure that you are well-hydrated.

Find support: Connect with other breastfeeding mothers for support and encouragement. Sharing experiences and tips can be invaluable. Join a breastfeeding support group or online forum to connect with other moms.

Seek professional help: If you're struggling with breastfeeding challenges, and experience problems like persistent pain, poor latch, or any doubts about milk supply, consult a lactation consultant or your doctor .
