These infections are usually brought on by bacteria getting into the urinary tract. Among all UTI cases, women are disproportionately affected, with roughly half experiencing at least one UTI episode in their lifetime. Because of the shorter urethra in women's urinary tracts than in men's, bacteria can more easily enter the bladder, making women more vulnerable to infections, says Dr Vikas Jain, consultant and HOD - Urology, robotic surgery and kidney transplantation, Manipal hospital, Dwarka.

In addition, women are more susceptible to UTIs due to hormonal changes, such as variations in estrogen levels during menstruation and menopause, which can affect the urine environment, says Jain who also suggests some preventive measures.

Preventive measures

Drink enough water: Drinking enough water helps in the removal of bacteria from the urinary tract.

Maintain hygiene: You may stop the transmission of bacteria by practicing proper genital hygiene, which includes wiping after using the restroom from front to back.

Urinate post intercourse: Getting rid of any bacteria that may have entered the urethra after sexual activity is facilitated by emptying the bladder.

Steer clear of irritants: The urinary system can become irritated by some products, such as spermicidal lubricants, strong soaps, and feminine hygiene sprays, which increases the risk of infection.

Healthy diet: Urinary tract health can be enhanced by eating a balanced diet high in fruits, vegetables, and probiotics.

Frequent and timely urinary tract health checks: Routine screenings for urinary tract health will help identify any problems early and help prevent urinary tract infections.

Refrain from holding urine: Regular bladder emptying and avoiding extended urine retention will help reduce the risk of bacterial overgrowth in the urinary system.

Probiotics: Consuming foods high in probiotics, such as yogurt, or taking probiotic supplements may help keep the bacteria in the gut and urinary system in a healthy balance, which lowers the risk of UTIs.
