The young generation is more open about their emotional well-being than past generations and are leaning heavily on technology to support it. From AI chatbots to mindfulness apps, digital solutions offer convenience, privacy, and instant support. But while tech can be a great starting point, experts caution that it’s not a complete substitute for human connection and professional care.
Tech-based mental health tools:
For Gen Z, growing up with smartphones and social media has made digital platforms a natural place to seek help. AI-powered apps offer features like mood tracking, self-assessment quizzes, guided meditation, and even chatbot therapy—all at the tap of a button, says Vidyut Lata Dhir, psychologist and professor at SPJIMR. “Gen Z appreciates the comfort, anonymity, and control that these platforms provide. These tools are especially appealing for those hesitant to reach out face-to-face or who live in areas with limited mental health services,” he adds.

Plus, apps are often affordable, or even free, which makes them an accessible first step. “But while these features are useful, they rarely go deep enough to address complex emotional challenges,” Dhir says.
Limitations of tech when it comes to health and healing:
Despite their accessibility, AI mental health tools often lack the emotional nuance needed to truly support someone in distress. “Technology can guide, but it can’t replicate the safety, empathy, and tailored feedback of a real human therapist. Real therapy involves subtle observations, relational dynamics, and intuitive understanding, these are things that machines cannot offer. Over-reliance on digital solutions might also discourage people from seeking professional help when they need it most,” explains Dhir.

Another concern, Dhir says, is data privacy. “Sensitive emotional information collected by these apps could be misused or leaked, further affecting a person’s mental state. And while these tools offer connection, their overuse might ironically fuel feelings of isolation. AI can support well-being, but it’s human connection that truly transforms it,” he adds.
Dhir suggests the following ways in which Gen z can use AI tools:
