ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) is a globally trusted remedy for dehydration caused by diarrhoea, heat, or excessive sweating. It works by restoring essential electrolytes such as sodium and potassium, along with glucose, to help restore your body’s fluid balance. ORS is a very good medicine when used properly, especially in the case of dehydration in children as well as adults.
However, the belief that “more is better” becomes a disease when ORS is taken in excess amounts. Unlike plain water, ORS contains electrolytes and sugar in carefully measured proportions. But consuming it in excess or without actual need can result in an imbalance of electrolytes in your body, turning the risk into complications instead of relief.
High consumption of ORS can lead to hypernatremia (high sodium), kidney damage, and can also exacerbate dehydration if consumed improperly. Those not in true need (nor with other conditions that might matter), need to be careful.

Here, Dr Radhika Sinha, Mumbai-based Clinical Nutritionist, explains the hidden perils of drinking excess ORS and when you must utilise it.
1. Electrolyte Imbalance
Overconsumption of ORS can overload the body with sodium and potassium, causing hypernatremia or hyperkalaemia. This may lead to fatigue, weak muscles, dizziness, and confusion.
2. Kidney Strain
The kidneys work harder to filter excess salts. Frequent excessive intake can put long-term stress on the kidneys, potentially impairing their function.
3. Risk of Hypernatremia
Abnormally high concentrations of sodium in the blood can thus cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, and – in serious cases – seizures and a swollen brain.
4. Worsens Existing Health Conditions
Since ORS contains salt, patients with hypertension, kidney disease, or heart problems have a higher likelihood of elevated blood pressure.
5. Overhydration and Water Retention
Drinking ORS without dehydration can disrupt a water-salt imbalance in the body, which can also lead to bloating and water retention, and can also stress the body.
6. Misuse in Heat or Sports
Even athletes or people who are exposed to heat tend to consume ORS more than they need, reeling on the belief that it will provide extra energy to their bodies. It may disturb stomach and electrolyte balance with high ORS.

7. Blood Sugar Concerns
Since most ORS have a fair amount of glucose, the sugar level in the blood can increase when taken in excess, which could be dangerous for a diabetes patient or someone suffering with insulin resistance.
8. False Sense of Security
Relying too much on ORS may delay medical treatment in cases of severe diarrhoea, infections, or other underlying causes of dehydration.
