8 foods to include in your diet to cure dengue fever, increase platelet count

Puerto Rico's health department has declared emergency as dengue, that is spread to people through bites by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, cases surge across the Americas, Caribbean, and Brazil, prompting a public health emergency declaration. With 549 cases already reported this year compared to 1,293 in all of 2023, the urgency to combat this mosquito-borne disease is evident.

Even, In India, especially in New Delhi, dengue cases have spiked drastically, reaching nearly 5,000 cases this year alone. This is more than double the cases seen in the same period in 2022, marking the highest numbers in the last five years so its necessary to be cautious.

Symptoms of dengue

According to Dr Himanshi Patnaik from Mumbai, dengue symptoms can be swift and severe including high fever, headaches, rashes, and joint/muscle pain, typically appearing within three or more days. Without proper care, the condition can quickly worsen.

Boosting immunity with nutritious diet 

To combat the dengue virus, boosting immunity is crucial. Certain foods rich in essential nutrients and vitamins aid in a speedy recovery. Include these in your daily diet:

Papaya leaves: Research has shown that papaya leaves can elevate platelet counts, crucial for dengue patients. A recommended method is to consume papaya leaf juice, says Patnaik.

Herbal mix: One can consume a mix of Tulsi, Ashwagandha, Ginger, Giloy, and Aloe Vera to control disease spread. Amla, rich in Vitamin C, is also advised to boost immunity.

Pomegranates: Loaded with minerals and nutrients, pomegranates provide a rush of energy, reducing fatigue common in dengue patients. They also aid in maintaining blood platelet count due to their iron content.

Coconut water: Dehydration is a common issue with dengue, making coconut water a valuable choice due to its electrolytes and nutrients. Ginger water is also recommended to combat nausea.

Turmeric: Known for its antiseptic properties, turmeric with milk can aid in faster recovery and boost metabolism.

Fenugreek: Fenugreek acts as a mild tranquilliser, inducing sleep and easing pain. It also helps stabilise high fever.

Oranges: Rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C, oranges and their juice can aid in treating and eliminating the dengue virus.

Supplemental remedies: While these foods can aid in recovery, it's crucial to note that they should be seen as supplemental forms of treatment. Dengue fever can escalate rapidly, so seeking medical help upon observing symptoms is vital.

Food to avoid:

Non-vegetarian food: It is advisable to avoid non-vegetarian food. Opt for warm water instead of normal water.

Oily and fried food: These contains fats that may lead to higher blood pressure, hindering recovery.

Spicy food: It causes acid buildup, leading to ulcers and complicating recovery.

Caffeinated beverages: Avoid these drinks as they cause fatigue and increase heart rate, not ideal during illness.

Preventive measures

To prevent dengue, it's crucial to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Here are some general tips:

  • Clear stagnant water sources.
  • Keep homes well-lit as mosquitoes prefer dark, damp areas.
  • Apply insect repellent in and around living spaces.
  • Wear full sleeves and trousers when outdoors.
  • Use mosquito nets if sleeping areas are not screened or air-conditioned.
