More than half of families in Delhi-NCR have been experiencing symptoms of viral illness since last month, according to a survey by LocalCircles. The findings reveal that at least 54 percent of households have one or more members showing flu or viral fever symptoms, likely triggered by seasonal changes.

Who Is most at risk?

The survey indicates that older adults (above 50) and young children are particularly vulnerable to these viral infections, which present symptoms such as headaches, cough, fatigue, mild fever, and respiratory issues. Those with underlying health conditions — including hypertension, diabetes, asthma, COPD, and heart disease — are also at a higher risk of developing complications.

Hospitals across Delhi-NCR have reported an increased number of cases of pneumonia and bronchitis due to severe infections, as per sources cited in the LocalCircles survey.

The survey gathered over 13,000 responses from residents of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. Among the respondents, 63 percent were men, and 37 percent were women.

When asked how many individuals in their household were experiencing symptoms such as fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, stomach issues, joint pain, body aches, or respiratory problems, responses were as follows:

  • 9 percent reported that four or more family members were affected.
  • 45 percent stated that 2-3 individuals had symptoms.
  • 36 percent reported no cases in their household.

Compared to the last survey conducted in August 2024, the percentage of affected households has risen from 38 percent to 54 percent signaling a notable increase in seasonal illnesses.

Preventive measures to stay safe

Dr Nehal Shah, Consultant in Pediatric Medicine at Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital, recommends the following precautions to reduce the risk of infection:

  1. Get vaccinated: An annual flu shot, including protection against H1N1, can help prevent severe illness.
  2. Wear a mask: Use a high-quality N95 or surgical mask in crowded or poorly ventilated areas.
  3. Practice hand hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitiser.
  4. Avoid touching your face: The virus can spread through contaminated surfaces that come into contact with your mouth, nose, or eyes.
  5. Maintain social distance: Avoid close contact with individuals showing flu-like symptoms.
  6. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids helps keep the respiratory system healthy.
  7. Practice proper cough etiquette: Use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing, and dispose of tissues properly.
  8. Disinfect surfaces: Regularly clean frequently touched objects such as doorknobs, phone screens, and keyboards.
