The news of AR Rahman and Saira Banu's divorce has left fans around the world stunned. After nearly three decades of marriage, the iconic couple has decided to part ways, leading to widespread speculation and concern over various aspects of their separation, including the custody of their children and the potential for reconciliation.
Prominent divorce lawyer Vandana Shah recently discussed the matter with Vicky Lalwani on his YouTube channel, providing insight into the ongoing proceedings. Addressing the custody of the couple’s three children, Shah clarified that it remains under deliberation. “That’s not decided yet… But some of them are adults, they are free to choose who they stay with,” she explained.
The topic of alimony was also brought up during the discussion. Shah refrained from making any definitive comments but emphasised Saira Banu’s integrity, stating, “She is not a money-minded person.”
Throughout their marriage, Saira has maintained a low public profile, and this continues to be the case during their separation.
What caught the attention of many was Shah’s perspective on the possibility of reconciliation. “I am an eternal optimist, and I always talk about love and romance,” she remarked. “The joint statement is quite clear, it talks about pain and separation. It’s a long marriage, and a lot of thought has gone into this decision, but nowhere have I said that reconciliation is not possible.”
Her hopeful outlook suggests that there might still be room for the couple to mend their relationship.
Earlier this month, AR Rahman and Saira Banu announced their decision to separate after 29 years of marriage, citing “significant emotional strain” in their relationship. The couple, who married in 1995, has three children – Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen. In their joint statement, they emphasised their request for privacy during this challenging time. “After many years of marriage, Saira and AR Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate. Despite their deep love for each other, they have experienced significant emotional strain in their relationship. The resulting tensions have created an insurmountable gap, one that neither feels capable of bridging at this point,” the statement read.
The announcement was made in two parts, with Saira initially addressing the separation in a personal statement, followed by a joint release. Rahman later confirmed the news with a tweet from his personal account, including a hashtag. Their lawyer confirmed that the couple is working towards an amicable divorce, prioritising respect and understanding.
