Veteran actor Vinod Khanna died on April 27 in 2017. The late actor had an illustrious career and starred in some of the hit blockbusters. Akshaye Khanna, who made a grand comeback with Chhaava, once revealed that he never wanted to share the screen with his father.

During a 2008 interview with IANS, Akshaye said, “There are certain people whom you shouldn’t work with. My dad is one of them. Amitabh Bachchan is another. To stand in the same frame as them confidently is impossible.”

The actor explained, “They’ve such an overpowering screen presence. It’s very difficult to match my father on screen. It’s that quality – either you have it, or you don’t have it. Very frankly, I don’t have it. I just don’t have that kind of presence. There are some actors who just wash you away on screen. My dad is one of them.”

Akshaye Khanna might be hesitant to play his father Vinod Khanna on screen because he feels pressured to live up to his dad's legacy, especially after working with him in his debut film, Pankaj Parashar’s 1997 romance Himalay Putra.

Despite Vinod Khanna’s successful career, no one has initiated to make a biopic on his life, not even his own sons, Akshaye Khanna and Rahul Khanna. Akshaye shared in a throwback interview that he never gave a thought to Vinod Khanna’s biopic.

During a 2017 interview with IANS, Akshaye shared, “I haven’t ever thought about it so I can’t say. But I think biopics by nature, I suppose as accurate as they can be, the better for an actor.”

The actor then reflected on the challenges of playing his father on screen and noted, “It’s very challenging as well as risky for an actor to portray a real life character because you are portraying someone who actually existed. So, it becomes really difficult.” Akshaye also insisted that one must “think 10 times” before playing a real-life character.

Akshaye might not be ready to play his father in his biopic, but he has definitely portrayed some of the real-life characters on the screen. He played Hiralal Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s son, in Feroz Abbas Khan’s Gandhi, My Father (2007).

Additionally, he recently starred as another historical character, Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, in Laxman Utekar’s blockbuster period war drama Chhaava. The film was a massive success, and Akshaye’s performance was praised by the critics.

For the unversed, the legendary actor Vinod Khanna is best known for films like Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), and Qurbani (1980). He has achieved several milestones in his career and multiple prestigious awards. He has also earned a Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2018).

Besides his entertainment career, the actor extended his work to politics and was the Minister of State for External Affairs in 2003-2004.
