The Delhi High Court has given a small but significant victory to Priya Sachdeva Kapur in the ongoing inheritance dispute over her late husband Sunjay Kapur’s estate. On September 10, the court clarified that Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur, is not a party to the matter and ordered her name to be struck off the record after it was mistakenly included in earlier proceedings.
The clarification came in response to a complaint filed by Priya Kapur, who alleged that Mandhira had attempted a “backdoor entry” into the case. She argued that her sister-in-law had no legal standing and should not be allowed to interfere in the high-stakes dispute.
In her application, Priya pointed out that the September 10 order had wrongly noted the appearance of counsel on behalf of Mandhira Kapur. “Upon the careful perusal of the Case History of the captioned suit…it is apparent and clear that Ms. Mandhira Kapur has not filed any application to be impleaded as a party,” she wrote, calling the inclusion of Mandhira’s name a “mischievous attempt to mislead” the court. She went on to describe it as “an abuse of process of law” and a deliberate move to create an incorrect record.
After reviewing the submissions, the court acknowledged the error and directed that its records be rectified. For Priya Kapur, who has faced mounting opposition from her stepchildren and mother-in-law, the decision marks a first legal win in a case that could stretch on for years.
At the center of the fight is an estate valued at nearly Rs 30,000 crore. Sunjay Kapur, an industrialist who died unexpectedly, left behind children from his previous marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor, as well as his widow Priya. His children have disputed the validity of a will produced by Priya, calling it “forged and fabricated” and accusing her of attempting to cut them out of their inheritance. They argue that their father had promised to provide for them through the family trust.
Priya, in turn, has defended the will as genuine and told the court that the children had already received Rs 1,900 crore from the trust before filing their challenge. Meanwhile, Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has also joined the proceedings, alleging she has been left with nothing.
The Delhi High Court has directed Priya Kapur to make a full disclosure of her husband’s assets, keeping the spotlight firmly on the next round of this escalating legal battle.
