The story begins with Raja marrying Sonam, a resident of Indore, on May 11. After a brief stay with Raja’s family, Sonam returned to her parents’ home. From there, she convinced Raja to plan a honeymoon trip to Shillong. Initially hesitant, Raja agreed and booked tickets. The couple left for Shillong together.
On May 23 at around 1:30 PM, Sonam made her last phone call to her mother-in-law. She mentioned that she and Raja were in a forest and might visit a nearby waterfall that required going down 3000 steps.
After that, both Sonam and Raja’s phones went off. Their families alerted the police, and a search began. At first, there were fears of an accident. But on June 2, Raja’s body was found near the waterfalls in Shillong—badly decomposed and with serious head injuries. Sonam, however, was missing.
Days later, on June 9, Sonam called her brother from a roadside eatery in Ghazipur district near Varanasi. She claimed something bad had happened to her. Her brother informed the police, and the Meghalaya police brought her back from Ghazipur. During investigation, it was revealed that Sonam and her lover had conspired to kill Raja. She had helped plan the murder during the honeymoon.
The case opened up further after Sonam’s friends, who helped in the murder, were also arrested. Currently, all accused are in jail in Shillong, and the case is ongoing.
Videos of Raja and Sonam’s wedding and engagement were all over social media. In those videos, the couple seemed happy and participated in all rituals together. No one could have guessed that such a serious betrayal was in the works.
This story is now being turned into a film that will showcase both the emotional and criminal sides of this tragic case.
