On a recent visit to filmmaker Rakesh Roshan’s beautiful Khandala home, Farah Khan got him talking about one of the most iconic elements of Indian superhero cinema — the Krrish mask.
As the two caught up and enjoyed a plate of arbi fry, Rakesh opened up about the long and painstaking process it took to get Hrithik Roshan’s superhero look just right.
When Farah asked how long it took to create the mask, Rakesh replied, “It took about six months because we were designing which looks better on Hrithik including the outfit and all that six months.”
Every detail, from the costume to the mask, was tested and redesigned over months to make sure it suited Hrithik perfectly.
What many fans might not know is that the mask, which became a symbol of the franchise, was actually made of wax. Rakesh explained, “The mask was made out of wax. Hrithik used to wear the mask for three to four hours. The wax would melt. He had to remove it and put in a new one. So I had an airconditioned bus with the AC on for 24 hours.”
The lengths they went to behind the scenes were incredible — including keeping a fully air-conditioned bus running around the clock on set just to preserve the fragile mask. Rakesh also pointed out how heavy the black superhero outfit was, making Hrithik’s job even more demanding during action sequences.
Krrish, released in 2006, was the second chapter in a franchise that began with Koi... Mil Gaya. It followed Krishna Mehra, a young man with inherited superpowers, who travels to Singapore and eventually transforms into the masked hero Krrish to stop a villainous scientist bent on misusing technology.
The film featured an impressive cast including Priyanka Chopra, Naseeruddin Shah, Rekha, and Sharat Saxena.
After Krrish 3 in 2013, the fourth film in the franchise was officially announced in April 2025. This time, it’s even more special — Hrithik Roshan will be stepping into the director’s chair for the first time, while also reprising his role as Krrish.
Produced by Yash Raj Films in partnership with Rakesh Roshan, filming for Krrish 4 is set to begin early next year.
