Days after objecting to being referred to with her husband's name, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan brought humor and light-heartedness to the Rajya Sabha by introducing herself as "Jaya Amitabh Bachchan" on Friday.
This surprising move came after she had previously raised a strong objection to being addressed in this manner, insisting on recognition for her individual identity and achievements.
The moment was filled with laughter as Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar, along with several Opposition MPs, including Congress's Jairam Ramesh and AAP's Raghav Chadha, found the humor in Bachchan's playful introduction.
Dhankhar's reaction was particularly notable as he burst out laughing, setting the tone for a series of light-hearted exchanges.
What ensued was a delightful banter between Jaya Bachchan and Jagdeep Dhankhar. Bachchan teased Dhankhar, saying, "Did you get a lunch break today? No? This is why you're taking Jairam ji's name repeatedly. You cannot digest your food without taking his name."
Dhankhar, not missing a beat, responded, "I'll tell you on a light-hearted note. I did not take a lunch break today, but I had lunch with Jairam ji." This witty retort further evoked laughter in the House, showcasing the camaraderie among the members.
This incident marked a stark contrast to Bachchan's earlier remarks on July 29, when she had taken a firm stand against being referred to as "Jaya Amitabh Bachchan" by the Rajya Sabha Chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh.
During that session, she had asserted, "Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed," emphasizing that women should not be recognized solely by their husbands' names and highlighting their own existence and achievements.
In response to her earlier objection, the Deputy Chairman had gently reminded her that her full name in the official records was "Jaya Amitabh Bachchan."
This initial exchange highlighted an important discussion about the recognition and respect of women's identities beyond their marital associations.

Jaya Bachchan's recent playful introduction, however, showcased her ability to blend serious advocacy with humor, engaging the House in a memorable and light-hearted moment.
This episode serves as a reminder of the dynamic and multifaceted nature of parliamentary proceedings, where moments of levity and serious discourse often intersect.
