India's top multiplex chain PVR INOX has dropped the price of movie tickets for its Blockbuster Tuesday offer.
Movie tickets that were priced at Rs 99 now will cost cinegoers Rs 95 including Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The price cut comes with the beginning of Navratri festival.
Starting from September 23, the base price for Blockbuster Tuesday tickets will be Rs 92 with a 5 percent GST applicable.
Under the new GST rates, GST on movie tickets priced at Rs 100 or less has been lowered to 5 percent from 12 percent.
The multiplex chain said that the adjustment in their Rs 99 ticket ensures that the benefits of the recent GST reduction are directly passed on to audiences, making cinema more affordable for all.
Blockbuster Tuesdays is a weekly initiative which includes latest releases at a discounted rate.
The theatre chain lately has been experimenting more with initiatives to make movie tickets more affordable and around discounted food and beverage (F&B).
Many exhibitors had pointed out that the reduction of GST on movie tickets priced at Rs 100 or below will only benefit single-screen and small-town cinemas which are far and few in the country with many single screens on the verge of shutting down.
Many exhibitors had urged to increase the threshold of Rs 100 to Rs 300 as many multiplex chains have an Average Ticket Price (ATP) of Rs 250. PVR INOX had reported an ATP of Rs 259 in FY25.
In addition, only 5-10 percent of the tickets are priced at Rs 100 and that too during promotional events at multiplex chains.
However, as full recovery of footfalls remain a challenge with admissions still down by 15-20 percent versus pre-Covid levels, multiplex chains like PVR INOX have been trying to generate footfalls with promotional offers as well as food and beverage with Cinema Lovers Day, with tickets at Rs 99 for standard seats and Rs 199 for premium and recliners, and Senior's Day every Monday, among others.
"We institutionalised days like Cinema Lover’s Day / National Cinema Day – five celebrations during the year that reignited excitement around the big screen experience. Drawing 3.4 million attendees at 39 percent occupancy, these days reinforced cinema as a joyful, collective ritual and helped re-anchor moviegoing as a recurring habit," the company noted in its FY25 Annual report.
The drop in movie ticket price for Blockbuster Tuesday not only comes during the festive season but also when a host of Hindi, Hollywood and regional movies are attracting audiences in large numbers.
Moviegoers have the option of the recently released Bollywood venture Jolly LLB 3 starring Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi, anime movie Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle and Telugu-language fantasy action-adventure film Mirai among others.
Upcoming releases in the coming week include One Battle After Another, Strangers Part 2, Shin Chan the movie: Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers, They Call Him OG, among others.
