Park Chan-wook's No Other Choice has recently been picked by the Korean Film Council to be the nation's entry for Best International Feature at the 98th Academy Awards.
The decision sets up the celebrated director, whose credits include Oldboy, The Handmaiden, and Decision to Leave, which was shortlisted in the category, for another Oscar run.
The dark comedy, which is vying for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, was first shown there and is based on Donald E. Westlake's novel The Ax.
Park's most recent film, which Neon is handling in North America, is creating a lot of buzz among voters. Parasite's historic 2020 Oscar sweep set the bar for Korean cinema on the international scene.
Producer CJ ENM is releasing the film in Korea on September 24. It opens the Busan International Film Festival.
On December 16, the Oscar international feature shortlist will be revealed, and on January 22, the final five nominees will be revealed.
No Other Choice revolves around Yoo Man-su, a paper industry expert with 25 years of experience, who had been content with life, feeling he had achieved it all. He was happily with his wife Mi-ri, their two children, and their dog. His world turned upside down when he was abruptly laid off by his company.
The South Korean black comedy thriller film was co-written, produced and directed by Park Chan-wook. It stars Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran, and Cha Seung-won.
