On veteran actor Sunil Dutt’s birth anniversary, veteran actress Saira Banu took to Instagram to share fond memories of her late friend and colleague. Reflecting on her time working with him, she described Dutt as a kind, righteous, funny, and mischievous person. Her tribute highlighted not only his professional talents but also his playful personality that left a lasting impact on her.
Saira Banu and Sunil Dutt shared the screen in several films, including the classic comedy 'Padosan,' released in 1968. She recalled how, despite being offered numerous projects together, particularly from the South Indian film industry, they only managed to collaborate for the first time in 'Padosan.' She noted that Dutt had always wished for them to be cast in a romantic film rather than a comedy. “Ever since we first met, Dutt Sahab and I were offered many films together, especially from the South, but unfortunately, the projects never materialized. Eventually, when we were doing ‘Padosan,’ Sunil Dutt raised his hands in dismay and exclaimed, ‘Saira ji, what is this? We are doing such comedy together whereas we both should have starred in a magnificent romantic subject such as ‘Anthony & Cleopatra!’” she wrote.
Saira Banu also reminisced about Sunil Dutt's mischievous side, particularly during their work on the 1976 film 'Nehle Pe Dehla.' She recalled how Dutt would joke about wanting to eat onions before every romantic scene. “He was such a comedian that whenever we had to do any romantic scenes in ‘Nehle Pe Dehla,’ which was a very glamorous film for me, Sunil Dutt would share the romantic shot with me but first tease me by calling out to his assistants, ‘Aarey Bhai! Hum log romantic scene karney waley hain, toh sabsey pehley ek plate main achchi pyaaz laao. Let us start the scene with eating onions.’ He was such a brat!”
Banu’s heartfelt post also touched upon the deep friendship between Dutt and her late husband, Dilip Kumar. She emphasized how their bond went beyond professional respect and grew into a familial relationship. “Dilip Sahab and Dutt Sahab shared a friendship that was more like family. They were always there for each other through thick and thin. Whenever one of them faced a challenge, the other was right by his side, offering support and encouragement. Despite their iconic status and luxurious lives, Dilip Sahab and Dutt Sahab never turned a blind eye to the struggles of their fellow members in the film fraternity,” she shared.
She highlighted how both Dutt and Kumar were dedicated to the film industry, often working late into the night to address industry-wide issues or crises. “They were always at the forefront, burning the midnight oil together, whether it was tackling industry-wide issues or facing crises head-on. Their dedication knew no bounds, whether it meant discussing solutions at three or four in the morning,” she added.
Through her reflections, Banu painted a vivid picture of Sunil Dutt as a multifaceted individual whose kindness, humor, and dedication touched many lives. Her anecdotes provide a glimpse into the personal and professional dynamics of one of Bollywood’s most beloved actors, celebrating his legacy and the lasting impression he left on those who knew him well.
