Payal Kapadia made history at the 77th Cannes Film Festival by being the first Indian filmmaker to win the second highest award at the prestigious festival - the Grand Prix award.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (Formerly Twitter) to congratulate Kapadia and her team on earning this distinguished accolade. He praised her creativity and said that she is going to inspire a whole generation of storytellers.

Addressing Kapadia’s historic feat, PM Narendra Modi wrote - "India is proud of Payal Kapadia for her historic feat of winning the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her work ‘All We Imagine as Light’. An alumnus of FTII, her remarkable talent continues to shine on the global stage, giving a glimpse of the rich creativity in India. This prestigious accolade not only honours her exceptional skills but also inspires a new generation of Indian filmmakers.”

Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine As Light’ was the first Indian film in 30 years to be in the run for the esteemed Palme d’Or. Although, she lost to Sean Baker’s ‘Anora’, she stressed that just being selected for the competition is honour enough.

Kapadia received the Grand Prix award from ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ star Viola Davis. She made history by being the first Indian filmmaker to receive this award.

During her acceptance speech Kapadia asked the festival to not wait another 30 years to select an Indian film again. She also highlighted the importance of presenting strong female friendships.

The official description of the film reads - "In Mumbai, Nurse Prabha's routine is troubled when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a spot in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend. A trip to a beach town allows them to find a space for their desires to manifest.”
