Daniel Craig is returning to the big screens as ingenious detective Benoit Blanc in the highly anticipated Rian Johnson-directed “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” the third addition to the Knives Out franchise. And his new guise is absolutely riveting.
On Monday, director Rian Johnson shared a tweet featuring the initial behind-the-scenes glimpse of Craig portraying detective Benoit Blanc.
Aaaaand we’re off! Today is day 1 of shooting on the next Benoit Blanc mystery “Wake Up Dead Man” - see you on the other side. pic.twitter.com/Napfvq1zXT— Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) June 10, 2024
The black-and-white photo captures the 56-year-old British actor with long hair, dressed in a three-piece suit, and holding a hat. “Aaaaand we’re off! Today is day 1 of shooting on the next Benoit Blanc mystery Wake Up Dead Man – see you on the other side,” wrote Johnson in the caption.
The film which is due in 2025, positions Craig as the link tying together the three "Knives Out" films. He will be teaming up with a stellar A-List ensemble. This cast features Josh O'Connor of “Challengers" (2024) Cailee Spaeny from "Civil War” (2024), Andrew Scott of "All of Us Strangers” (2024), Jeremy Renner from "The Avengers," Mila Kunis of "Black Swan” (2010), Josh Brolin of "Dune: Part Two," among others.
While the intricacies of the storyline and the journey of the characters remain veiled, the film is poised to present Blanc with yet another innovative and enigmatic puzzle to solve, akin to the mysteries encountered in the preceding films Knives Out and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
In the 45-second teaser Johnson released recently, the James Bond star narrated, "In the beginning, the knives came out. Then, behold, the glass was shattered. But my most dangerous case yet is about to be revealed.”
Several fans of the whodunit franchise that draws inspiration from Agatha Christie's novels, were shellshocked at the first look of Craig. One fan wrote, “Long hair AND a fedora? I smellll prequel?” one speculated, while others compared Craig’s changed appearance to Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible franchise. “the knives out movies are gonna be like mission impossible with tom cruise alternating between long and short hair. i dig it.” An X account named “The Hook” that discusses about films and TV series, also wrote, “We’re seated. The theater employees and Netflix are scared and asking us to leave because “it’s not 2025 yet” but we’re simply too seated.”
The movie, a component of the director's $450 million agreement for two sequels with Netflix, anticipates its release on the streaming platform in 2025.
