One of the most recognisable family dramas on Indian television, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, is triumphantly returning after a 25-year hiatus.
With actor-turned-politician Smriti Irani reprising her beloved role as Tulsi Virani, StarPlus has formally released the first teaser for the rebooted series. The show will stream on JioHotstar and premiere on Star Plus on July 29 at 10:30 p.m.
In the nostalgic promo shared by StarPlus on Instagram, Smriti is seen watering a tulsi plant—a symbolic nod to her character’s enduring cultural connection.
The teaser began with the serial's title song playing on a TV while a family was eating at a restaurant. The question of whether or not Smriti Irani will return for the serial is then brought up. Then the video starts Smriti's Tulsi as they discuss her chances of making a comeback to the serial.
Dressed in a regal purple and gold saree with her hair neatly tied in a bun, she turns to the camera and says warmly, "Zaroor aaoongi, kyuki humara 25 saalon ka rishta jo hai. Waqt aagaya hai apse phir milne ka [I'll definitely come because we have a relationship of 25 years. The time has come to meet you again]." Her trademark folded hands and gentle smile instantly transport viewers back to the original show’s heyday.
The caption accompanying the video further heightens the excitement: “ Kya aap abhi bhi vishwaas nahi kar paa rahe? 25 saal ke baad, Tulsi Virani laut rahi hai, ek nayi kahaani ke saath! #KyunkiSaasBhiKabhiBahuThi ek baar phir taayaar hai har ghar ka hissa bann ne. Kya aap bhi taiyaar ho? Dekhiye #KyunkiSaasBhiKabhiBahuThi, 29th July se, raat 10:30 baje, sirf StarPlus par aur kabhi bhi JioHotstar par. #TulsiIsBack #StarPlus #JioHotstar See translation”
Reflecting on her return to the show that shaped both her career and Indian television history, Smriti Irani shared, “Coming back to ‘Kyunki’ isn’t just about reprising a role—it’s about reconnecting with a story that transformed my life and became part of so many homes. It gave me more than just recognition; it gave me an emotional bond with viewers across the country.”
She added, “I hope this new chapter honours the original’s legacy while pushing the boundaries of storytelling. As someone who has always believed in the power of narrative to bring about understanding and preserve culture, this return is deeply meaningful.”
Originally airing between 2000 and 2008, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi ran for over 1,800 episodes and became a cultural phenomenon. Created by Ekta Kapoor, the show starred Amar Upadhyay, Apara Mehta, and Hiten Tejwani, among others. Its return marks the 25th anniversary of its debut on 3rd June, 2000.
Now, with fresh stories and the same emotional core, Tulsi is ready to step into our living rooms once again.
