Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, who have been married for two years, have filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The split, while reportedly handled with a degree of composure, could become contentious, particularly because the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage.
The couple's elopement at The Little White Chapel in Las Vegas marked the beginning of their union, but the lack of a prenup may complicate the proceedings. Lopez's divorce filing lists their separation date as April 26, 2024, and notes that their assets are “unknown.”
In California, only the assets and income acquired during the marriage are considered community property, which includes their $60.8 million Beverly Hills mansion, purchased last year, as well as various projects and endorsements.
Currently, Lopez and Affleck are engaged in mediation, a less formal process that aims to resolve disputes more swiftly than a traditional divorce. Despite the ongoing legal issues, both are reportedly coping well.
Affleck appears to be in a positive state of mind, settling into a new $20.5 million mansion in Brentwood, which he purchased on July 24, coinciding with Lopez’s birthday. He is said to be pleased with his new neighborhood, which is close to his children, and remains focused on his work and the positives in his life.
On the other hand, Lopez has been searching for a new home since May but has yet to find a suitable property after listing their $68 million Crestview Manor mansion for sale. Despite some lingering bitterness about the split, a source close to Lopez mentioned that she feels fortunate and is supported by family, friends, and her children.
The legal separation between Lopez and Affleck was finalized on April 26, and Lopez officially filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court on August 20.
As they navigate this challenging time, both are working through the complexities of their separation while managing their personal and professional lives.
