On the first anniversary of Liam Payne’s death, his girlfriend Kate Cassidy and his two sisters, Ruth Gibbins and Nicola Payne, paid heartfelt tributes to the late One Direction star.
Kate, 26, shared a black-and-white photo on Instagram of herself and Liam snuggling in bed, writing, “Today marks a full year without you here. I will forever hate goodbyes. I miss you Liam.” She also posted a playful TikTok video of Liam lifting her up in a grassy field.
On October 16, 2024, Liam Payne tragically died after falling from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. According to the National Library of Medicine, an autopsy later determined that he died from "polytrauma," which included numerous injuries to various organs and systems.
At the time, a toxicology report from the prosecutor’s office noted that Liam had traces of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants in his system.
Liam was a member of the globally successful band One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan.
His older sister, Ruth Gibbins, 34, also shared a touching tribute on Instagram. She began with a photo of Liam dressed in a Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired costume and wrote a long, emotional message in his memory.
“1 year, 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days… whichever way I say it, it still means the most heartbreaking truth that you're not here anymore,” Gibbins wrote. “When you used to go away on tour, and I’d cry that you’d be gone for a while, I always knew you’d come back. But now I can’t get you home, I can’t meet up with you somewhere in the world, I can’t FaceTime or text to see how you’re doing. It’s an eternal homesick feeling because we can’t go back.”
She added that Liam “shouldn’t have died” at such a young age and recounted a recurring nightmare where she is in his hotel room just before the accident. “I can’t get past the fact that you couldn’t hear me screaming for you, my brain is locked on your last minutes on this earth, the unaccounted minutes, the minutes I will never have the answers to, the minutes that changed everything,” she wrote, expressing the deep pain and loss she continues to feel.
